I just watched Heroic Duo and it’s a fun, slick Hong Kong thriller that keeps you hooked. Director Benny Chan brings together Ekin Cheng and Leon Lai in a story full of twists, mind games, and plenty of action. The movie follows Inspector Ken Li, a confident cop who suspects hypnosis is behind a robbery at the police station.

To crack the case, he recruits Jack Lai, a jailed psychologist and hypnotist with his own dark secrets. Things get wild when a criminal hypnotist plans a diamond heist and everyone gets pulled into a dangerous game.

This movie moves fast and never really slows down. There’s always a chase, a shootout, or another surprise around the corner. The story is clever even if it gets messy at times, especially near the end. But the sharp editing and stylish camera work keep the energy high throughout.

The action scenes look great with wide shots and quick cuts that make everything pop. There are also some emotional moments, especially with Jack and his wife, that give the movie more depth than your typical action thriller.

The performances really lift this film. Ekin Cheng is solid as the tough but emotional cop, and Karena Lam brings warmth as his girlfriend even with limited screen time. Leon Lai steals the show though. He’s calm and mysterious, and his scenes showing guilt and love for his family give the movie its heart. Francis Ng is perfect as the villain, playing him cruel and smart but also weirdly fun to watch.

The action is well done with exciting stunts that feel real. One scene where Ekin Cheng hangs from a ladder between two buildings looks genuinely dangerous. The final showdown mixes gunfire, emotion, and even humor in a way that works surprisingly well. Benny Chan always knew how to balance those elements.

Sure, the movie has flaws. The logic doesn’t always hold up and the hypnosis stuff stretches believability pretty far. The ending gets overly dramatic and some emotional scenes feel forced. But it never gets boring and the style and energy make up for most weaknesses. Heroic Duo might not be as good as Infernal Affairs, but it’s still a solid thriller that keeps you guessing. Even when it gets a bit silly, it stays entertaining all the way through.
