I watched The Ghost (also called Dead Friend), and it’s a Korean horror film that feels very familiar. It borrows heavily from movies like The Ring and Dark Water. You get the pale ghost, lots of water, and a revenge plot tied to guilt. It’s not original at all, but I still found parts of it entertaining. The visuals are nice and the sound design does a good job building tension.
The story is about Ji-won, a girl who lost her memory and is trying to start fresh. Then her old friends start dying one by one. She slowly remembers that they all played a cruel prank years ago that killed a girl named Su-in. What’s interesting is that Ji-won seems sweet now, but we learn she used to be mean and selfish. That shift in her character kept me interested.
For most of the movie, the mystery works. The ghost scenes aren’t super scary but they create this cold, uneasy feeling. The underwater shots and dark hallways build good atmosphere. The acting is solid, especially from the lead, and the greenish lighting gives it a creepy look throughout.
But then the ending messes everything up. The twist reveals that Su-in’s soul took over Ji-won’s body, and the real Ji-won’s ghost wants revenge. It’s way too complicated and feels forced. What had been a clear emotional story suddenly becomes confusing. The final scenes try too hard to shock you and it just doesn’t land.
Despite the weak ending, The Ghost is still decent if you like Asian horror. It has all the usual stuff like revenge, guilt, friendship, and angry spirits. Nothing new, but it’s made with care and looks good. I wouldn’t say you need to see it, but if you enjoy atmospheric ghost stories and don’t mind a familiar setup, give it a shot.
