I watched The Wig, and it’s one of those Korean horror films with a plot that sounds ridiculous but tries to be super serious. It’s literally about a haunted wig. Su-hyun comes home after chemo, weak and bald, so her mute sister Ji-hyun gives her a wig to boost her confidence.

At first it works great. Su-hyun looks better and feels stronger. But then she starts acting weird, flirting with Ji-hyun’s ex and becoming cold and aggressive. Ji-hyun suspects the wig is causing it and digs into where it came from, finding a disturbing secret.

The movie tries to be both horror and drama but fails at both. The sister relationship could’ve been emotional, but the characters are so flat I didn’t care about them. We never really learn who they are or why they do anything. The horror is weak too. There are a few creepy moments but most scares are predictable. There’s even a dumb cat jump scare that made me roll my eyes.

I’ll give the movie credit for looking good though. The grey tones, soft lighting, and clean camera work give it a nice polished style. The atmosphere feels sad and heavy, which fits what they were going for. But nothing really happens for long stretches, and when something does happen, it’s usually confusing or silly.

The twist about the wig being made from a dead man’s hair, a gay lover who killed himself, comes way too late and feels overdone. Suddenly the movie tries to be a ghost story, a tragedy, and an identity drama all at once. I couldn’t figure out what emotion it wanted me to feel.

By the end I just felt tired, not scared. The Wig tries to be emotional and deep but it’s just messy. A cursed wig could’ve worked if the movie leaned into the absurdity or went for real psychological horror. Instead it’s slow, confusing, and way too serious about itself. Not the worst horror film out there, but it really makes you wonder why anyone thought a haunted hairpiece could carry a whole movie.
